National Citizenship Coalition Surpasses One Million Goal
On Monday, the national citizenship campaign co-led by SEIU announced it has
surpassed its goal of helping more than one million eligible immigrants apply
for U.S. citizenship in 2007, nearly doubling the total number of applications
received in 2006. The Ya es
Hora: ¡Ciudadania! (Citizenship, It’s Time!) campaign will continue its
efforts, pledging to help move applicants through the processing backlog and
boost Latino voter turnout in November.
"This citizenship surge, carried
by the optimism and hope that seal each application, is a victory for all
Americans," said SEIU Executive Vice President Eliseo Medina. "Just as
immigrants of all stripes are increasingly under attack, this community is
re-asserting its patriotism and its commitment to help strengthen the U.S.
democracy. This is the kind of civic participation our country needs to thrive."
